What You Need to Know About Pets and Feng Shui

Every space needs active energy and love. Pets give us both. And pets allow us to express our love, too. Pets are often looked on as members of the family, and as such, should be considered when you are reviewing the feng shui of your home.Regardless of the type of pet, there are some simple feng shui guidelines about having pets that range from common sense suggestions about care and feeding, to things you might not consider, such as how pets impact your relationships, finances, or health.PETS ARE GOOD FENG SHUIThis is the most important thing to remember. Their energy and liveliness means we have an active home even when we aren’t there, making our homes more “yang.” Dogs, for instance, also provide protective energy for our homes helping us to feel more secure and safe.When dogs bark and wag their tails happily, they give us lots of exuberant joy. And petting and caring for any animal gives us and them great feng shui energy — and displays of love are always wonderful feng shui. This is the best case. But when are pets not good feng shui? There are some instances when the feng shui of your home is disturbed by pets.GOOD FENG SHUI MEANS PETS ARE CARED FOR PROPERLYThe worst case scenario is when pets are not cared for properly. If the fish tank isn’t clean and clear, the fish don’t do as well – and neither do you. Fish represent success in feng shui and wealth, and if the water is dirty, then both may elude you.Furthermore, in feng shui, dirty water can also lead to health problems. One of the worst situations I ever saw was a fish tank so dirty you couldn’t even see the fish at all. The couple who lived in this house were dead broke and divorced after a short time. I could feel nothing but sorrow for those poor, poor creatures.What must have other visitors thought — and what did this nasty tank do the psyche of everyone in the home? Or, what was the message to the child who saw parents who cared so little for these fish that they wouldn’t even provide them with clean water?

So, while it’s nice to have a pet, the first priority must always be the pet’s health, safety, and care. If you don’t have the proper space or time to care for the pet, then it’s better not to have them because, simply put, having animals in poor condition(s) is very bad feng shui.GOOD FENG SHUI KEEPS PETS & PEOPLE BALANCEDIf animals live in the house, it’s important to make sure that proper hierarchy is observed. I can’t tell you how many pet horror stories I see that range from romantic difficulties to health problems because the pets have dominance over people. Remember, you are the master of your domain, and it should remain this way. Also, good feng shui is about balance.While there are cases where animals are not cared for properly, i.e., given the right conditions, treatment, too little interaction or stimulation, or care, it’s very often the case that the pets are in a position superior to the people in the house. This means the house is out of balance, and if this is the case, the feng shui is impacted. The end result means that life is not as good as it could – or should – be.Try to observe some simple feng shui pet rules.1. ANIMALS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED ON FURNITURE- unless it’s furniture specifically for them. This puts them on equal footing with people.2. ANIMALS SHOULD NOT BE ON THE BED, particularly for couples. This divides the couple and gets in the way of romance, and sometimes, the relationship. It would be better if the animals were not in the bedroom of a couple, but if it comes to choosing between pets sleeping in the room on the bed or the floor, go with the floor, never the bed.3. PETS SHOULDN’T BE THE FIRST THING SOMEONE NOTICES ABOUT YOUR HOUSE.Pets should enhance a home, not dominate it. If your kitty litter box is the first thing you see – or smell – when you enter someone’s home, then there’s a problem – and it’s not just mean the smell. If this is the case, you will find that this is a house where the occupant(s) is usually struggling.Maybe you have a dog that barks, jumps on, scares or threatens people as soon as they enter your home. Well, then, you have a situation where every time someone comes in, fear comes with them. Is this the kind of environment you want to live in?If this sounds like your pet(s), then at the very least, they should be secured in another room when someone comes to visit. The fear they inspire will create a yin environment. If this is your situation, then you have a home where your energy is dragging and motivation is low.One homeowner has a very large aggressive dog that he thinks is sweet and wonderful. However, this dog scares visitors. This dog definitely rules the roost and he knows it.What’s worse is when a pet is given full reign of the house and its owner thinks it’s “cute.” One such homeowner struggles on a number of fronts, particularly with relationships. This is definitely a situation where the animal comes before the person, and makes one wonder if the dog scares away potential love relationships. Authority should be re-established with this pet so that the home is allowed to draw people (or a new love interest?) to it.4. YOUR DOG/CAT/BIRD/ETC. SHOULDN’T COME BEFORE ANYONE ELSE.If Fido or Fluffy do, this, too, is a problem. Feng shui is all about balance. If pets are completely superior, then balance doesn’t exist. For example, one woman had pictures of her dog all over the house. She struggled with finding a romantic partner and was very upset about being over forty with no love prospects in sight. She even had an expensive oil painting of the dog over her bed.Well, how could a romantic partner come to the house when 1) the dog barked and jumped on everyone coming in the door; and 2) the dog was “top dog” to the extent that she symbolically slept over her master every night?Despite being advised to move the picture and make other enhancements to help her love life, but she would not part with the picture and remains single to this day. Pets should not come between people.

5. YOUR HEALTH SHOULDN’T SUFFER FROM HAVING PETS.I am constantly amazed at people who suffer from all kinds of health complaints, but yet they have eight indoor cats and swear it’s the pollen outside that’s bothering them. The cats are all over the furniture and the kitchen counters. This is not healthy, not to mention a turn off to visitors. Cats, in particular, are yin animals. Offset their yin energy by keeping lights on and music playing to keep your home active and energetic.6. DON’T MAKE YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY AVOID YOUR HOME.If you have to use a lint brush on friends and family before they leave your house, this could make others avoid coming over. The fur clinging to them is very “yin” and will make them feel depleted or dirty when they leave your home. This energy then makes your house feel yin, too.If your house isn’t sociable, visitors rarely come by, or people leave right away, then think about revving up your environment with bright colors, sunlight, music, or other active enhancements. It may be that the environment is too yin.7. USE YOUR PETS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE WITH FENG SHUI.Simply having a loving pet is good for you. But, the pet must also be good for the entire home to the extent that the pet is friendly, clean, and not bothersome to your relationships or visitors to you home.Dogs are wonderful for infusing a home with lively energy, fish bring success, turtles symbolize longevity, and cats are symbols of financial luck (i.e., lucky cats seen at Asian businesses). So, as hard as it might be, take a long look at your pet situation to make sure that your pets aren’t harming your feng shui and are enhancing your life.

Pets and Pests

Though we love our pets and would not give them up for the world, they do make our homes much more inviting to pests. It’s important for both your sanity and your pet’s health to discourage pests from seeing your pets as reasons to enter your home. Here are a few ways to keep your pets while avoiding an unpleasant pest problem.Pet FoodThose of us who allow our pets to freely feed, either inside or outside, are inviting pests into our homes. Left out pet food is attractive to everything from the smallest ant to dangerous coyotes. To avoid attracting pests with pet food, it’s important to feed your pets inside (coyotes can smell food hours after it’s been there and will return to look for it) and to schedule your feedings. Keep pet food tightly secured in plastic or metal containers when storing it.

Pet WasteDisgusting though it may be, even your pet’s bodily waste may attract both wildlife and insects. Pet waste still contains valuable nutrients, so it may attract bugs and rodents looking for nutrition. If you have a dog or outdoor cat, it is important to clean up after them when they use the restroom. Properly dispose of your animal’s waste instead of leaving it out to attract unwanted vermin.Indoor cats and other small mammals like rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs and hamsters all use litter for their bathroom needs. It is vital to clean pet litter at least once daily to discourage pests. If you notice vermin in your home, you should clean your pet’s litter even more frequently to avoid having it further attract the vermin. Certain cat litters are also made from corn and wheat by-products that may attract unwanted guests, so you may want to consider switching litters if your litter has become an obvious attractant.Parasite PartyAnother obvious way in which pets attract pests is their undeniable attractiveness to parasites like fleas, ticks and even bedbugs. It’s important to practice monthly prevention to avoid inviting these bloodsuckers into your home. Talk with your vet about a monthly flea, tick, and heartworm medication that will keep your furry friend from bringing stowaways into your house. If bedbugs are a particular concern, also speak with your vet about what you can do to avoid having Sparky bring them home.

Pest ControlIf the pests still come into your home, it is important to let a professional exterminator take care of the problem. Many commercial bug sprays and pest products can be genuinely hazardous to Fluffy and Max. Pet emergency clinics make their bread and butter from unwitting owners that put out poison for pests without realizing that a poisoned bug or rodent is a delicious snack for Rex or Bella. Instead of doing your pest control yourself and putting your pet in danger, hire a professional extermination team. They will be sure to use methods to remove your pest problem that won’t harm you or your furry family members. In addition, they can inspect your home to find out why pests are interested in coming in and give you ways to block the pests from your home.

Interactive Cat Toy for a Happier Pet and Owners

Having an interactive cat toy can immensely help pet owners in many ways. This is a very good tool to develop physically healthy cats, a good way to ease pet’s depression or boredom and a good source of fun time between pets and owners.Animals do have feelings and they get depressed. You can actually detect depression in their change of behavior. Depression may come from factors like losing a family member, arrival of another animal (especially another adult cat), change of environment, and boredom.Cats are very sensitive to human behaviors. They are able to remember the patterns of their time to work and coming back home. When family member leaves the house, let’s say your son goes to college and does not return after several months, your cat may miss him. She may come towards the door every time a knock or a doorbell is heard expecting to see your son’s familiar face and smell his familiar scent. After several days you may notice your cat losing appetite realizing that one of his human families are no longer around especially if she is attached to that person.

Cats that were brought up to be the only pet in the house may develop jealousy if a new pet is introduced. Like humans, cats also desire to have interaction or playtime with their owners. Lack of this activity can cause boredom and eventually depression of your animal. You can detect depression when your cat becomes lethargic, eats less than her usual consumptions, sleeps most of the day and likes to stay in just one spot most of the time.To relieve your cat’s depression, the quickest way to achieve that is to create some play time. Caressing her fur is one thing, interactive playing is better as this engages your cat into a more physical activity. Cats are active predators and I have found that our cat enjoys running after her toy mouse attached to the end of a stick. My dad and I would make her chase that toy mouse as we control the stick on where she should chase it. This has become a daily exercise for her as well since she can be a really lazy pet. Not only that, we have found this to be a surprisingly fun time for us too, finding ourselves laughing so hard when we see her move around and slide on the floor all the way from one corner to another. We are enjoying this so much and are thinking of buying her a new interactive cat toy.

The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary

The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary is home to over 100 different species of animals, and there are over 300 animals living at the zoo. The zoo is located west of Austin on Rawhide Trail, which can be found by turning off of Highway 290 West shortly after its intersection with Highway 71 West, onto Thomas Springs Road, which intersects with Rawhide Trail a few miles down the roadThe Austin Zoo includes educational facilities and beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens, as well as habitats for bears, lions, and numerous exotic birds and reptiles. A petting zoo allows visitors to have close contact with harmless species of animals, and patrons can purchase feed at a nominal cost in order to interact more closely with the animals, which is a special treat for children visiting the zoo.The primary purpose of the sanctuary is to provide rescue, rehabilitation and education to assist animals in the zoo. The zoo had over 200,000 visitors last year, and is a popular destination for families in the Austin area. Originally, the Austin Zoo was a goat ranch, but in 1990, it changed its name to Good Day Ranch, and at that time, the animals consisted mostly of deer, goats, donkeys, ponies, and pigs, with few exotic animals.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
The zoo is open every day from 10:00am to 6:00pm, except Thanksgiving and Christmas, and admission is $7.00 for adults and $4.00 for children, with discounts for seniors, students and military personnel, so the zoo is quite affordable for the whole family. Yearly passes for unlimited visits are also available for individuals as well as families, and proceeds go to providing more homes for the many animals that are turned away since the zoo is regularly inundated with requests to rescue various kinds of animals, both domesticated and wild.Among the animals at the zoo are big cats such as lions, panthers, tigers, and jaguars, along with Old World and New World Monkeys, as they are classified, and amphibians such as toads, frogs, salamanders and the like. There is also a reptile habitat that includes snakes iguanas, geckos, and tortoises, and various exotic birds, which include lovely peacocks strolling around on the grounds. There is also a sanctuary for unwanted and unusual livestock, many of which have been rescued from those who no longer want them, such as llamas, pot-bellied pigs and miniature donkeys, as well as longhorn cattle.The Austin Zoo supports a pre-school television program called “Sprout Please!” which provides educational content for young children, and the zoo is also helping promote an appearance by animal expert Jack Hanna, who will appear at the Paramount Theater in downtown Austin in early October to speak about his experiences with wildlife. Another yearly event at the zoo is called Boo at the Zoo, which is held during the week of Halloween for children, along with their parents, to visit the zoo in their costumes and have a safe opportunity to see the animals and ride a “haunted train”.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
The zoo is kept in the dark during these nights of fun and parents are encouraged to bring flashlights for peering into the cages and habitats, although some overhead lighting will be provide. Picnics are welcomed during the Halloween event, and the activities promise fun for all.The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary is an Austin treasure, and worth the short drive out to the hill country, so keep the zoo in mind this Halloween, or any day of the week!

Pets and Animals: More Than Companionship and Loyalty

Whether you are single or married with kids or not, you may have additional family members – known as ‘pets’. As for me, I love cats and dogs. I love animals but I am quite choosy. My late father had lots of cats and I think growing up with lots of cats in the house has made me subconsciously love the felines. As for dogs, like I said, I like certain breeds only, not all dogs appeal to me, sorry. I am not really sure if I should mention my favorite movie, Cats and Dogs, you could presume that I have sided on the cats more than the dogs.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Why do I like cats? For one they are quiet and I am the kind of person who is somehow sensitive to noise. I may not be able to let a cat fetch something for me or play almost continuously with me, like dogs do. Like cats, I have limitations too. They also said that cats compared to dogs, are more independent. I would say, that is also a reflection of my personality. Most often times I spend my time alone and I am more effective that way, specially that my job requires almost complete silence. Being an online English teacher, most of my students would prefer a quiet background. My cat comes near me without making any noise, so that is really perfect. You do not hear cats pant like dogs do.Anyways, let us talk more about the general things about pets and animals. As pet owners we would like them to be healthy and if possible to live a little bit longer after the age they are expected to go. There should proper care for the pets and that includes the right combination of nutrients in the food they eat. Take them to the vet as regular as they should. They also need exercise to improve their muscles. If we have pet dogs that serve as guard dogs we need to give them proper nutrition and care for their optimum performance. There are also times that a child would like to adopt either a cat or a dog. There are certain things that we need to know about that. The best way we could do is do some research and asking around form people we know who already has adopted either a cat or a dog.
